I'll always remember the day that I met Him outside of Jerusalem's gate
Accused of committing unpard'nable sins – and condemned to a criminal's fate
They said He was worse than Barabbas the rebel – defying the laws of the day
Battered and bruised now the weight of the cross made Him stumble along the way
They never did prove that He broke any laws it was all circumstantial at best
I couldn't believe the injustice they rendered - the truth was never addressed
So many accused Him of all kinds of sins although no one could show any loss
Through all of the trial He suffered alone - until I had to carry His cross
They said He was Jesus the prophet from Naz'reth and surely I'd heard of His name
He had nothing to drink to provide for His thirst and nothing to cover His shame
There wasn't a hint that He bore any vengeance - compassion was all that I saw
The Roman who forced me to carry His burden was merely imposing the law
They mocked Him and told how He'd saved many others but now He was helpless and weak
In spite of ridiculous accusations He clearly refused to speak
Then they dared Him to call down the heavenly host just to rescue Him out of their hands
But His only words were Father forgive them – there's no one who understands
It's been several years but with each passing day now the drama still plays in my mind
And the Light of The World is still bringing sight to those who are wandering blind
Today its a different burden I carry for all of the sheep who are lost
And now its an honor with each passing day that I get to carry His cross

When the night surrounds me and I think it will never end
Everyone seems so far removed – even my Closest Friend
There's one thing that's for certain – like a rock on the shifting sand
Its a promise of life in the midst of the strife – by the One who's holding my hand
Its as sure as the sunrise each morning – announcing the breaking of day
As sure as the rainbow caressing the sky after the storm rolls away
As sure as the roses that bloom in the spring when the new life appears once again
This love that He gives telling me that He lives – like the sunshine after the rain
When the storm clouds gather and they darken the summer sky
I wonder does He still care about me – and can He still hear my cry
Then a voice breaks through the stillness after the tempest is past
Speaking peace to the sea and assurance to me – that I'm safe in His presence at last
(Now) The fields are green with the springtime and its the promise of life anew
The winter snows have melted away and the April showers are due
The warm earth fuels expectations of life under summer skies

It wasn't much to look at and I couldn't really see
Any plan for his fulfillment whenever that might be
But the sculptor didn't seem concerned about the public's view
He defended his creation in these words I share with you

He's still a work in progress not a finished piece of art
The vision of completion I still hold within my heart
There's a few rough edges to be planed – some angles to be set
So he doesn't look quite like I've planned - but I'm not finished with him yet
I marveled at his patience as the sculptor plied his trade
I looked around the shop at other pieces that he'd made
A common love was evident – yet each was so unique
I caught his dedication in the words I heard him speak
I wondered who the model was I'd seen that face before
Then the understanding hit me like the opening of a door
I felt my life was open there for all the world to see
That explained why his creation would appear so much like me
(Because)
I'm still a work in progress not a finished piece of art

How many times have I come to You with all my troubles and fears
When I don't have anywhere else to turn You're the only one who hears
There's never a hint that I'm bothering You with all of my petty affairs
I always feel I'm important to You in spite of my worries and cares
I'll never quite understand just why You love me the way that You do
No matter how often I stumble and fall You never say that we're through
And considering all of the blessings You give – there's only one thing I can say
It's because of Your love that my life keeps getting better and better (and better)

The sun was hiding behind the clouds when I woke up today
But after I spent a moment with You the storm started rolling away

And I heard the hope that only You can give in the voice of Your tender reply
Now I'm not going to say that I haven't a care as long as I'm following You
If I told how the troubles surround me each day it couldn't be any more true
But even the burdens and troubles of life are rapidly drifting away
And the nearer I get to the end of all things – it keeps getting better each day

All my life I sought for attention I didn't want to merely survive
I didn't care how I trampled on others – as long as it kept me alive
But the wealth I collected never filled up the void as the greed kept driving me on
So I gave it all up when I met with the Hope of a brand new dawn
And starting today I want to tell everyone about the mercy I've found
Let His praise fill my mouth with a joyful sound
I'm gonna do everything that He wants me to do – I'm gonna say what He wants me to say
Things are gonna be different – starting today
In my heart I knew I was sinful but I craved the acceptance of man
I just lived for the joy of the moment true love wasn't part of the plan
Til my sin was exposed to everyone in the crowd who wanted to stone me that day
But I wasn't condemned - “don't sin anymore” - that was all He'd say
I was raised in the truth of the scriptures living right came easy to me
So proud to be one of the chosen – I hoped all around me could see
Til I realized that I truly was nothing when compared to the light of the Word
