I hear that it is a common emotional struggle when someone reaches my age. Looking back at life one begins to compare their station in life with the ambitions of their youth. And we tend to assign measures of personal success depending on the proximity of those two points of reference. Three of the most common measuring rods are:
All that I've hoped for - all of my personal hopes and dreams
All I've been given - all of my accumulated worldly possessions
All this world's expectations – all of the standards of success that are set by today's society
But in the end the only adequate response must be - I lay it all in surrender at the feet of the only One who is competent to make such a value-judgment of our accomplishments.
